In-depth reading of the Book of Genesis, containing some of the most famous and beloved passages in the whole Bible. We will address the sources of these stories, how they have been interpreted by different communities at different times, and how they have been foundational for the three Abrahamic religions.

Additional Requirements for Graduate Students:
A full-blown research paper engaging texts in Hebrew or, if apocryphal, Greek, with the aim of publication; conducting at least one discussion session, or delivering a thirty-minute lecture.

From the long reign of the pro-Roman king Herod the Great, through three revolts that shook the empire to its foundations, to the rise of the rabbinic movement, this course explores the transformation of Judaism and the everyday lives of Jews.

Dr Aaron Rubin Publishes New Book

A Grammar of Kistane by Dr Aaron Rubin Cover

Congratulations to Dr Aaron Rubin on publishing his new book, A Grammar of Kistane (Ethiopian Semitic). In this book, Dr Rubin provides the first full-length grammatical description of Kistane (also known as Soddo), a Semitic language spoken in Ethiopia, and one of the so-called Gurage languages. Based on the ethnographic and folkloric texts collected by Wolf Leslau, as well as modern native sources, this grammar presents a detailed account of the phonology, morphology, and syntax of this important but understudied language.

 

James Bielo Talk

On Wednesday, September 2nd, Dr. James Bielo, Associate Professor of Religious Studies at Northwestern University, will visit the Religion Department and speak about his book Words Upon the Word. This event will take place in Peabody Hall 201 from 1:15-2:35pm. All interested are welcome to attend the talk.
