Double Dawgs

Religion AB/Nonprofit Management and Leadership MA(non-thesis)

Career and Academic Opportunities

This Double Dawgs pathway will give high-achieving undergraduate students the opportunity to earn their M.A. in Nonprofit Management and Leadership. We place a strong emphasis on helping students acquire and use the skills and techniques for understanding human behavior, social context, and sound research, as well as in leading nonprofit organizations that serve diverse communities. Our expectation is that this Double Dawgs pathway will provide a clear step for our dual-degree students majoring in Religion to pursue opportunities as leaders in the nonprofit sector including with faith-based organizations. There are more than 1.3 million "charitable" 501c (3) nonprofits in the United States, and studies show that over the next decade, nonprofits will need to attract and develop more than 500,000 new managers due to the growing number of nonprofit organizations, growth in the size of nonprofits, and the retirement of managers from the vast baby-boomer generation.

Religion AB/Public Administration MPA

Career and Academic Opportunities

This Double Dawgs program will give high-achieving undergraduate students the opportunity to earn their MPA with a top-ranked program (6th in the U.S. News and World Report’s 2020 rankings of more than 250 public affairs masters programs nationwide). In the program they will learn both the theoretical and practical aspects of public management and policy in order to prepare them for careers in public service with government agencies and nonprofit organizations. The MPA degree greatly expands the employment outlook for graduates, with over 96% of UGA MPA alumni finding employment within 6 months of graduation. Furthermore, many government positions now prefer and even require a master’s degree for entry and graduates from MPA programs nationwide have increased earning potential by$18,000 per year over those who only possess a bachelor’s degree. While the academic opportunities within the program are unmatched, the professional relationships that Double Dawgs students will be able to forge outside the classroom cannot be underestimated. Students will interact and network with employers and public sector professionals through UGA MPA alumni events, internships, as well as with the department’s cosponsor, the Carl Vinson Institute of Government. While most students seek the MPA as their final professional degree, the Double Dawgs program will also allow students to earn their MPA with the ability of later entering a PhD or other advanced degree programs and pursuing careers in academia.

Career and Academic Opportunities

Faculty in the Religion Department engage in research and teaching about the diverse religious traditions of the world. The study of religion is an interdisciplinary field, and our work represents a stimulating range of methodological and theoretical approaches, from archaeological and historical to textual and ethnographic. Within this intellectual environment, we are committed to working closely with both our undergraduate and graduate students. Our graduate program has strengths across several graduate research clusters, including African American religions, Jewish studies, Islamic studies, Asian religions, biblical studies, and anthropology of Christianity. Graduate students engage in in-depth study in their selected area of specialization. Students with a master’s degree in Religion can apply to doctoral programs or pursue careers in non-governmental organizations (NGOs), community-based organizations, international aid and foreign affairs, the civil service, social work and counseling, public relations, education, libraries and museums, and more.
