J. Derrick Lemons, professor and head of the University of Georgia Department of Religion, has coauthored a new book examining the relationship between evangelical Christianity, prayer, and contemporary American politics. Trump and the Politics of Prayer: Inside the Spiritual World of His Faith Advisory Team, coauthored with Amos Yong, will be published by Bloomsbury on October 1. Drawing on 25 prayer-strategy calls involving members of Donald Trump’s faith advisory network, the book explores how prayer provided participants with a framework for interpreting elections, political power, national identity, and divine activity in history. Lemons and Yong examine the influence of spiritual warfare, prophecy, dominion theology, Christian Zionism, and efforts to “re-Christianize” the United States. Written for scholars, students, religious leaders, and general readers, the book offers a balanced, interdisciplinary analysis of the theological ideas and practices that have shaped an influential movement within American evangelicalism and national politics. The book has received endorsements from prominent scholars and religious leaders, including Tanya Luhrmann, Joel Robbins, Leah Payne, Matthew Taylor, and David Emmanuel Goatley.
