COURSE DESCRIPTION

This is the intermediate level of Bahasa Indonesia course. The main objectives of this course are to review, solidify and develop reading, writing, speaking and listening comprehension skills while simultaneously presenting cultural aspects of Indonesia. In addition to viewing at least one film and a selection of short stories will be discussed.

 

 

OBJECTIVES

By the end of the course students are expected to be able to:

á       read more advanced passages with intermediate level of comprehension

á       understand the grammar and implement it in intelligent writings

á       perform daily conversation with more colloquial expressions

á       develop cultural awareness through additional materials and discussions

 

 

ASSESSMENT

No make-up quizzes and tests will be given unless evidence of illness, interviews, accidents, or school activities is provided.

 

WRITTEN WORK :

You will be assigned three compositions during the semester, each one to contain a

minimum of 300 words (1 page = 250 words). Compositions must be typewritten and doublespaced to facilitate correction. You will be required to rewrite your compositions.

Late work will affect your grade. Absence or tardiness is not considered an excuse

for not knowing about an assignment.

 

ORAL PRESENTATIONS

There will be one oral presentation at the end of the semester. The format of this exam

will be discussed later in the semester.

            DI RUMAH TEMAN – AT A FRIENDÕS HOUSE. Describe houses, part of the house, furnitures, prepositions before and after, Topic-comment sentences, comparisons, enquiring about and indicating possession, indicating past tense

Topic 2

            DI JALAN – ON THE STREET. Distance, street traders, classifiers for occupations, numbers over 1,000; indicating future tense, frequency, affixation: noun with Ôke-anÕ, convey messages, the conjugation ÔbahwaÕ

Topic 3

            AYO KITA KE RESTORAN – LETÕS GO TO THE RESTAURANT. Menu, ordering, asking for the bill, indicating ÔwhenÕ, plural forms of address, Ôke-anÕ verb forms, an introduction to verbs, indicating present tense

Topic 4

            PERLU KE DOKTER – I NEED TO GO TO THE DOCTOR. Part of the body, describing symptoms, use of ÔpunÕ, verbs with ÔberÕ prefix

Topic 5

            TEMPAT BERBELANJA DI KOTA YOGYAKARTA – SHOPPING PLACES IN YOGYAKARTA. Clothes, shopping, group classifiers, making people plural, verbs with the Ôme-Ô prefix, enquiring about and indicating size, the Ôpe-Ô prefix

Topic 6

BERKUNJUNG KE DAERAH PEDESAAN – VISITING A VILLAGE. A comparison of living in a city and in a village, the conjunctions ÔsehinggaÕ and ÔsupayaÕ, indicating shapes, pronouns, the Ô-kanÕ suffix with causative effect,

Topic 7

TEMPAT-TEMPAT MENARIK DI YOGYAKARTA - INTERESTING PLACES IN YOGYAKARTA. Confirmatory questions by inversion with the Ô-kahÕ suffix, asking for permission, the Ôpe-Ô prefix attached to adjectives, agree and disagree, the Ô-kanÕ suffix with the meaning ÔuntukÕ, using ÔapakahÕ as a conjuction.
