1. General Observations

This Syllabus: The course syllabus is a general plan for the course; deviations announced to the class by the instructor may be necessary. Expectations: You are expected to come to class. You are expected to be on time. You are expected to turn off your cell phones etc. during class. You are expected to complete the assigned readings in preparation for class. You are expected to participate in class, to be respectful of others and to refrain from unduly dominating class discussion.
2. Course Description
A study of Mark 1-8 in Greek. While our primary attention will be given to Greek grammar and syntax, we will also discuss the character of the gospel of Mark and critical issues relating to the interpretation of individual passages.
3. Objectives
1) To obtain an intermediate
knowledge of Greek grammar through translating from the Gospel of Mark with
special reference to selected issues of grammar and syntax.
2) To become conversant with some
of the critical issues in modern biblical scholarship on Mark 1-8.

4. Time, Place and Office Hours
The course will meet from 9.30am-10.45am on T/Th in room 205C (Peabody).
My office hours are from 10am-11.30am on Wednesdays in Room 216B (Peabody).

5. Format: The seminar will consist in translating Mark 1-8,
commenting on points of grammar and syntax with reference to Wallace, and
discussing points of exegesis with reference to FranceŐs commentary on the Greek
text
6. Course Requirements:
10% Attendance
(1 unexcused absence permitted; 5 points off per day afterwards).
15% Response Paper on select criticisms of KittelŐs Theological Dictionary
75% Final Exam on Mark 1-8 in Greek: Translation & Grammatical Analysis

Write a short response paper (5-8 pages) on criticisms of KittelŐs dictionary with reference to the contributions of Barr and Cotterell/Turner
